With a massive campaign goal of more than $800 million toward renovations and construction of new buildings, the Iowa State University (ISU) Foundation needed to discover the perceptions and inclinations of alumni, friends, foundations and the corporate community around the country regarding the proposed projects.
The ISU Foundation called upon Amperage Fundraising Advisers to conduct feasibility studies for six building proposals during a 12-month time frame between September 2005 and September 2006. Every solid, successful campaign begins with a feasibility study to determine the project’s potential for accomplishment. Six separate studies were conducted regarding a new greenhouse complex for the department of horticulture; new and expanded athletic facilities; a new chemistry building; a new agricultural and biosystems engineering building; the initiation of the Animal Science Corridor; and the renovation of Curtiss Hall.
Due to the importance of face-to-face interaction, interviews were conducted throughout the country. Esteemed alumni, business people and industry leaders were interviewed to discover their thoughts about and connectivity to the projects. Once Amperage completed the interviews, the information was compiled and recommendations were presented to the ISU Foundation and college deans.
Amperage’s work formed the strategic framework for these six projects. Such strategies included:
- Improve awareness for alumni and the industry
- Consider naming opportunities
- Secure endorsements from key players
- Solicit department support
- Identify leadership donors
- Create campaign tools
- Cultivate lead donors
The Iowa State University Foundation plugged in to Amperage’s recommendations, resulting in a successful $847 million campaign.
